Dogs are amazing....they live in the moment and therefore heal so much more quickly than humans would in the same situation. Nathan is content just to be able to chew on his squeaky toy and bury his Kong in blankets and then pretend that he can't get it out. And he's happy to have me wait on him...bringing him his water dish, his food and his toy box as he seems to want those things (I don't want him walking to get them), and keeping him warm by wrapping him in blankets (Dachshunds love to burrow).
To him, now that he's not medicated any longer and now that he's not in pain, life is normal. He knows he can't go on walks, he looks to me to be carried outside to go potty, he doesn't show guilt should he go inside because he knows he doesn't get in trouble for that these days. But he definitely doesn't sit around dwelling on that fact that his butt is shaved bare, that he looks funny or that he has a huge scar where the stitches on his right hip were recently taken out. He doesn't seem to care one bit that he's not completely mobile or that he is sliding on his butt instead of walking across the floors.
He's as happy and sweet as he always was and seems to be healing fast, although really he's only halfway there and we have an appointment for follow up x-rays in another 4 weeks. I still can't believe he was hit by a car! He's so little...it's really amazing that he's alive and doing well!
